JOB DESCRIPTION

Are you someone who enjoys creating clean, safe, and welcoming environments for students, staff, and the community? Saline Area Schools is seeking an Afternoon Custodian to help ensure our buildings are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and inclusivity.

 

Under the general supervision of the Director, Building Principal, and Lead Custodian, the Afternoon Custodian plays a key role in promoting the health, safety, and success of our school community. This role includes following daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules for classrooms, bathrooms, offices, kitchen areas, and other spaces. Additional responsibilities may include basic building maintenance, snow removal, and other duties that support school operations. QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education/Certification

• High School Diploma or GED

Required Experience

• Reliable and consistent attendance is essential.
• Must be physically present and mentally alert to perform this job.
• Willingness and ability to learn proper cleaning methods and procedures.
• Effective verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience

• Prior custodial experience is helpful but not required.
• Experience working in a diverse, team-oriented environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

• Follow the daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedule for assigned school areas, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, and common spaces.
• Collect, bag, and dispose of all building trash and recyclables; disinfect garbage containers as needed.
• Clean and sanitize restroom fixtures daily using approved disinfectants; restock paper products and soap dispensers.
• Wet mop, sweep, and vacuum all floor types, including bathrooms, kitchens, and classrooms.
• Wash windows, walls, and surfaces according to schedule or as needed.
• Perform seasonal tasks including snow removal, salt application, and basic grounds maintenance.
• Replace light bulbs and report equipment or supply needs in a timely manner.
• Identify and report any maintenance needs, water leaks, safety concerns, or pest issues.
• Participate in emergency drills and maintain familiarity with building safety protocols.
• Attend required in-service training and collaborate with team members to support school-wide goals.
• Maintain a welcoming, respectful demeanor and contribute to a positive, inclusive work environment.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the school facility.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS, WORK HAZARDS

This position requires physical stamina, mobility, and the ability to lift up to 55 pounds. Duties may involve standing for long periods, stooping, climbing, carrying, and using cleaning tools. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and various weather conditions should be expected. Must be free from communicable diseases and breathing impairments. Ability to travel between work sites and respond to emergencies is essential.

 

EQUIPMENT

Must be able to operate cleaning and maintenance equipment such as vacuums, floor scrubbers, snow blowers, and other tools related to building upkeep.

School Year: Monday–Friday, afternoons

Summer: Hours may vary

 

FLSA STATUS

Non-Exempt

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

• 12-month position
• Benefits begin Day 1 of employment, and include:

RATE OF PAY

$19.50 per hour
