JOB DESCRIPTION

The CTE Welding and Fabrication Instructor will have a strong background in welding and fabrication, as well as a passion for teaching and mentoring high school students. This position involves developing and delivering a state-certified comprehensive Career and Technical Education curriculum that prepares students for careers in welding and fabrication, along with furthering their education in the field.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a valid Michigan Vocational Certification in related CIP code (48.0508) OR be eligible for Interim Occupational or Annual Authorization Certificate requiring a minimum of 4,000 recent and relevant hours of work experience in the field within the past ten years, and willing to pursue required credentials.
• Knowledge/Experience in metal work required; proficiency in various welding techniques (e.g., MIG, TIG, stick welding) and metal fabrication processes.
• Industry certifications in welding (e.g., AWS, ASME) are highly desirable.

Preferred Experience

• Previous experience working with young learners.
• Previous Career and Technical Education (CTE) experience preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

• Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, standards-aligned welding instruction in accordance with Michigan CTE standards and curriculum.
• Teach SMAW, GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), FCAW, oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting, and related metal fabrication skills.
• Skilled in interpreting blueprints, reading weld symbols, performing layout and fabrication, and programming CNC equipment.
• Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
• Utilize technology and industry-based welding equipment to enhance instruction.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and industry-standard welding lab environment.
• Ability to respond quickly in emergency or safety situations.
• Enforce OSHA safety standards and district safety protocols at all times.
• Provide safety training and ensure proper use of PPE.
• Conduct regular equipment inspections and coordinate maintenance and repairs.
• Manage inventory of materials, consumables, and equipment.
• Able to communicate efficiently and effectively in a professional manner.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to demonstrate initiative and understanding in working with students, staff, and parents/guardians.

• Effective classroom management and conflict resolution skills.
• Strong organizational skills for tracking student progress, certifications, inventory, and compliance requirements.

• Effective, respectful, and professional verbal and written communication skills with students, families, and staff members.
• Demonstrate exemplary attendance and punctuality.
• Use computer network systems and software applications as needed.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS, WORK HAZARDS

Ability to stand and move about the welding lab and classroom for extended periods, ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and access equipment and materials stored at varying heights, ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance, ability to tolerate exposure to shop conditions including heat, noise, fumes (with proper ventilation), and bright welding arcs, ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including helmet, gloves, safety glasses, and protective clothing. Additionally, must maintain constant situational awareness in a high-risk lab environment.

 

EQUIPMENT

Experience operating and instructing students in the safe use of welding and fabrication equipment, including SMAW, GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), oxy-fuel cutting, and related shop machinery.

 

TRAVEL

Overnight, weekend travel is expected for SkillsUSA competitions.
