Saline Area Schools Dean of Students

 

Position Purpose
The Dean of Students is a crucial role in maintaining a positive and respectful learning environment for all students and staff. They assist the principal and assistant principals with building operations, student supervision and student accountability, grades 6-8 at the Middle School. The Dean of Students promote the educational development and achievement of students in accordance with Board of Education policies, student code of conduct, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable law. 

Essential Functions

• Ability to work successfully with all students to provide a positive school experience and assist with meeting their educational needs by building trusting relationships.
• Support the enforcement of the school’s code of conduct to maintain a safe, secure and respectful learning environment.
• Implement the code of conduct fairly and consistently as necessary with transparency, communication and integrity.
• Monitor student attendance and collaborate with the administration and support staff to address chronic absenteeism and truancy. In addition, communicate with truancy officials as needed.
• Implement interventions to improve student attendance and collaborate and support underlying social-emotional challenges.
• Collaborate in the development of positive behavior support systems and intervention strategies.
• Collaborate with administration and staff when required to investigate a student incident involving behavior or misconduct. Comply with all due process expectations.
• Coordinate and supervise in-school suspension programs, ensuring a structured and supportive environment for students.
• Collaborate with teachers to provide educational materials and assignments for students serving in-school suspension.
• Attend and participate in school-wide emergency preparedness team meetings and implementation efforts.
• Strong communication skills, both orally and in written, with clarity and conciseness.
• Mentor students to improve individual decision making and accountability.
• Assist with the supervision of the arrival and departure of students to ensure student safety and security.
• Supervise the hallways during class transitions to ensure a safe, secure and orderly environment.
• Supervise the lunchroom with high expectations and promote a positive social atmosphere.
• Promote and support the supervision of extracurricular activities, clubs and student organizations.
• Redirect student behavioral issues as they arise on the spot.
• Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student behavior, attendance and intervention matters.
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of disciplinary actions, interventions and student support plans.
• Generate reports on discipline and attendance trends and work collaboratively with administrators to implement proactive measures.
• Perform other tasks as directed by the principal. 

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Principal, Superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and fax machines and telephone.

Travel Requirement
Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

• Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
• Adherence to education and student record confidentiality.
• Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and parents.
• Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Exemplary, regular and predictable attendance is essential for this position. Work in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile

Certification/License:

• High School Diploma
• Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education:

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and valid teaching certificate preferred. 
• Competitive preference will be given to candidates with previous diversity, equity and inclusion training. 

FLSA Status:    Exempt

Terms of Employment:

• 182 day student calendar position
• Up to 12 additional days, before and after the school calendar as needed, at a per diem daily rate
• Holidays (follow Student Calendar including early release and half days), 8 sick days, 3 personal business days and full benefit package
• Rate of pay: $40,000
