JOB DESCRIPTION

The candidate will bring interest, excitement, and enthusiasm for music through energetic lessons, music exploration, and a palpable love of music. The teacher should promote music in a way that brings children to find music they enjoy, helps regulate their emotions, and gives them a desire to have music in their lives.

 

The candidate will collaborate with the district music staff in implementing activities for music students within Saline Area Schools. The candidate will be specifically assigned to Heritage School (grades 4-5) and Saline Middle School. They will lead all 4th grade general music classes and 5th grade woodwind classes, be responsible for the maintenance and care of instruments, and prepare/conduct regular performances.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education/Certification

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Valid Secondary Michigan Teaching Certificate required
  • K-12 endorsement in music education with a JQ or equivalent

Preferred Experience

  • Clarinet and/or saxophone specialist preferred
  • Successful prior teaching experience in music for the appropriate grade level is preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

4th & 5th Grade Responsibilities:

  • Develops and administers music education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and group instruction, and student learning.
  • Supervises and implements instruction for students in class and in the community; directs the activities of HS cadet teachers in all areas of instruction as well as other activities.
  • Maintains accurate records in a manner consistent with state and federal laws as required by the District.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and adhere to current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, conferences, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to ensure a productive learning atmosphere during practice, rehearsal, and performances.
  • Participates in District-level staff meetings, in-service activities, staff development/special programs, school improvement teams, and planning committees as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate music supplies and instrumental equipment, maintains inventory records, and ensures equipment is in good working order.
  • Establishes and maintains open communication with parents, staff, administration, and outside agencies.

4th Grade General Music:

  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student musical learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual students' needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and group instruction as needed.
  • Create lessons that teach songs from all styles of music and culture with movement and accompanied by auxiliary percussion equipment or mallet instruments
  • Introduce treble clef note reading and practice skills to become proficient notation readers.
  • Guide students through lessons that introduce the district’s 5th grade music ensembles: band, orchestra, and choir.
  • Organizes/plans field trip for all 4th graders to attend HS music assembly to kick off 5th grade music selection unit
  • Help students decide on choices for 5th-grade music and place all students in 5th grade music ensembles.
  • Plans, coordinates rehearsals for, and directs students in evening musical programs and in school performances
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Participates as a part of Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings when necessary.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of student IEP goals and instruction based on individual student needs.

5th Grade Band Director:

  • Provides and coordinates the instructional program for students in the assigned area of responsibility, and evaluates results on a continuous basis.
  • Specifically teaches 5th grade beginning woodwind ensembles and team teaches 6th grade band
  • Assess students’ achievement and develop instructional strategies to meet the individual educational needs of students in the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Ensure NEW 5th grade students get placed in organized music ensembles
  • Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet the individual needs of students, considering such factors as physical, emotional, and educational levels of development.
  • Regularly documents student progress using assessment tools, monitoring through observations/evaluation, and/or collecting data. Uses student progress data to improve instruction.

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. 
  • Ability to play an instrument or instruments, and conduct students in playing instruments as needed. 
  • Ability to instruct students in singing, harmonization, and chorus as needed. 
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed. 
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. 
  • Communicate and plan accommodations necessary for students with special education case managers and paraeducators
  • Exhibits emotional stability, exercises good judgment, and makes decisions in accordance with board policies and administrative guidelines, with minimum supervision. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. 
  • Adheres to District health and safety rules, policies, and procedures.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS, WORK HAZARDS

Exemplary, regular, and predictable attendance is essential in this position. Employee must be physically present and alert. Employee must have an independent method of transportation to and from work. Candidate must have experience in standard office and school building environments. EQUIPMENT

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephones.

 

TRAVEL

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. This position may require daily travel between different locations.
